New Semester, New Me?

As I start a new semester in the coming week, I think back to last semester where I didn’t do as well as I wanted to. I wish I could say I had hard classes or that my professors were a-holes and didn’t grade fairly, but it was mainly me. I was too caught up in experiencing a new university that I didn’t take the time to focus on material that should have come easy to me.

This semester, I plan to prioritize my school work and manage my time a lot better than I have in the past. What happened this past semester is what has always happened when I’m in a new environment. Whether it was seventh grade, freshman year, or my first year at community college, I always struggle academically because I feel overwhelmed with the new environment. The funny thing is that the material isn’t what’s difficult to me, but just the amount of new people I now have to get accustomed to. It’s hard to explain, but it’s basically just me being overwhelmed in a new environment that really gets to me.

If any of you have any tips on how to stay organized and on top of schoolwork, please let me know! I have my own methods that always end up working for me, but that includes leaving all my work until the day before the assignment’s due date and I’m trying to leave those methods behind. I know, I’ve been in school for 16 years and I’m barely thinking of changing my procrastination ways now. I left community college with honors and now I’m trying to leave university with the same (or better) accolades.

Also, I know academic success does not measure how well I’ll do in my career, but it’s a total personal thing for me to do well in school. My education is basically my identity and the only inheritance my parents will be leaving me, so I cherish it to the fullest. I do take it for granted at times and forget how privileged I am to be able to pursue a higher education, but I still feel that it’s important for me to do well. That’s mainly the reason I always get bummed out if I don’t perform well academically.  When I don’t do as well as I hope to do then my identity takes a hit.

ANYWAYS, enough about my sucky first semester at a new school. Again, let me know if you have any tips on staying organized and on top of school work!

Sending positive vibes to all my friends and loved ones who are starting (or have already started) new semesters!
